The turning point for the product came after Martin Sacks, the first US distributor, was able to get Digby Prior, a ton of plotters and printers, and a driver writing utility in the same room in Los Angeles. TurboCAD was a DOS product with limited device support, whereas Generic CADD was strong in this area. Support was added for more video cards (EGA, Olivetti, etc.), input devices (Summagraphics digitizer, and later, the first Microsoft Mouse). This release was made under the brand Pink Software, with other stake holders John Glennie, Digby Prior, and Janine Copeman. Roy Abrams and Philip Copeman introduced it to the United Kingdom markets as TurboCAD in late 1986. South Africans Philip Copeman and Michael Cartwright worked on redesigning the product. The release of Generic CADD in the PC market was, at that time, the biggest ‘CAD event’ since Autodesk had reinvented CAD pricing with its initial release in 1981. before TurboCAD, it received much more positive press about its low price, (approximately $600 originally), and quickly achieved a large and loyal customer base. But because Generic CADD launched in the U.S. Both TurboCAD and Generic CADD's marketing objectives were the same – create a viable, low-cost competitor to AutoCAD. TurboCAD was released around the same time as Generic CADD in the United States.

The source code also fit on a single floppy disk along with the 30kb required by the " development environment": Turbo Pascal 2.0. The first version of TurboCAD fit on a single 360kb floppy disk so that it could run on the original IBM PC. Initial hardware support was for a specific device configuration: Hercules monochrome graphics cards, HP7475 plotters with keyboard for data entry. TurboCAD was originally developed in South Africa by Hendrik Vermooten and Hein Oosthuizen. IMSI Design released a High Sierra-compatible version of TurboCAD v10 in February 2018.

TurboCAD Mac Pro contains both 2D and 3D tools, while the standard version is for 2D drafting only.

The Mac versions of the software are built on a separate codebase and are not directly comparable with the Windows versions. With the exception of TurboCAD Designer, the other TurboCAD releases support both 2D drafting and 3D modeling tools. Its 3D tools are TC Surface tools, and it has a limited number of architectural and mechanical tools.įor users needing only 2D functionality, there is the much less expensive TurboCAD Designer. The Basic edition contains a limited set of architectural and mechanical tools, whereas Platinum contains all the tools.įor less demanding users, a less expensive TurboCAD Deluxe 2D/3D version is available. Both editions can create ACIS Solids or TC Surface objects, as well as Surface Meshes. TurboCAD Pro Basic and Platinum editions contain general drafting tools, as well as tools for 3D architectural and mechanical design.
All in all, I would warn not to take this software too seriously. (Even today with the big sale.) I do hate it when companies ignore early adapters. Furthermore, I have found enough workarounds, though it pains me to keep deleting extra walls, that I might have even upgraded to TurboCAD Pro if they didn't want to charge $200 for the privilege. That being said, I paid $130 when v.7 first came out, and I might have been happier if I had paid $50 less. Several of the features do not work as instructed in the manual.Įxported 3D drawings import fairly well into Lightwave for rendering, but TurboCAD's library textures do not export with the drawing, and cannot be accessed outside of TurboCAD. Doors and windows do not propagate when using the 2D to 3D tools, even in the tutorial model. AutoCAD files are hit and miss on import, sometimes scattered all over the drawing after importing. Undo would invariably insert duplicates of my walls, which I would have to delete time after time. I found this software (TurboCAD Deluxe v7) buggy under Mountain Lion OS.
